About

Description

The book of Deuteronomy is foundational to Old Testament theology and key to understanding God’s covenantal dealings with his people. Its themes of love and loyalty become important motifs throughout the rest of Scripture, built on God’s call for his people to remember his mighty deeds in the past, then trust and obey him.

In this rich exposition, Trent Casto walks readers through Moses’s final words to Israel—words that renew God’s covenant with them, reveal his steadfast love, and point to the fullness of his redemptive plan through Christ. With careful attention to historical context and the unity of Scripture, Casto offers biblically faithful interpretation and application that will lead readers to see the grace of God in the wilderness, as well as Deuteronomy’s enduring relevance for the church today as we seek to live as God’s covenant people.

As are all Reformed Expository Commentaries, this book is accessible to both pastors and lay readers. Each volume in the series gives careful attention to the biblical text, is doctrinally Reformed, focuses on Christ through the lens of redemptive history, and applies the Bible to our contemporary setting.

“Trent Casto draws out the Lord Jesus Christ as the center of Deuteronomy—the one who bore our covenant curses and bestows on us the covenant blessings that he purchased for elect sinners on the cross. By doing so, Casto shows again that the themes of gospel, grace, and gratitude are present in the Old Testament as well as the New. . . . Savor every page while you sit under the pulpit of a pastor who has carefully exegeted, diligently prayed over, and passionately preached through every verse.”

—Joel R. Beeke, Chancellor and Professor of Homiletics and Systematic Theology, Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary

“In the rising generation of gifted preachers and teachers, Trent Casto is among the best at explaining and applying the Bible. This new exposition of Deuteronomy is deep in its exploration of the Lord’s teaching through Moses, and clear as it draws connections of all kinds, from biblical theology to the practical directions it gives for both the church and wider society.”

—Daniel M. Doriani, Professor of Theology, Covenant Theological Seminary; Founder and President, Center for Faith & Work, St. Louis

“The task of the interpreter of the Bible is to straddle two worlds—that of the original audience’s cultural and historical context and the present situation of the contemporary reader. . . . Trent Casto delivers admirably on both fronts. Attuned to the biblical text throughout, Casto refuses to shirk the difficult interpretive questions, yet also provides wise pastoral application.”

—Thomas C. Gibbs, President, Covenant Theological Seminary
